As you already know, the Kindle 2 doesn't come standard with a cover so if you want one you'll need to purchase one separately (although they do encourage you to purchase the Amazon Leather cover as an add-on when you first purchase your new Kindle).
But there are more stylish Kindle 2 cover's for your Kindle (my favorite is still the Cole Haan Hand-Woven Patent Leather Cover) which while pricey is the ultimate luxury in Kindle accessories.
But if you don't have a spare $100 (I told you the Cole Haan Kindle covers were expensive) then you can get lots of different designs for under $30 - or even under $20 if you want to get a GelaSkin instead (these look funky but I'm not sure how much protection they really give).
If you are into really unusual designs then Oberon Designs do many different leather Kindle 2 cover's that are something you would expect the hobbits in the Shire to use - they are beautifully designs if what somewhat gothic in their appearance.
The most popular Kindle 2 cover is still the M-Edge Prodigy cover's because not only are they inexpensive they come in a wide range of colors so that you can change them as often as your mood.
Many people say how much the Kindle 2 has changed their lives and the way they read books now, all that time that you sit around waiting (for a bus, for your friends, for your favorite tv show to start) can be used catching up on the latest novel . Kindle's are easy to carry around with you and because most new books are under $10 (some are even free) you can be reading as often as you like.
Carrying around your Kindle is a much for efficient and organised way to get all your reading done, and that is why you would want to protect it with a good Kindle cover.

Do You Need a Kindle Cover?
One of the things that you'll notice most about the Kindle 2 is that it is light, very light. By adding a Kindle Cover you can give it some more weight so it feels like you are holding a real book. There are so many covers too choose from (this is where the Kindle outranks the other ebook readers by far!)
Plus you don't just have the regular black leather covers, many designers realise how popular the Kindle is and the importance of keeping it safe as well as looking stylish so companies such as M-Edge, Bobarra and Cole Hann have a great looking range in all price ranges.
There are also covers for the DX and there will no doubt also be covers for the Kindle 3 whenever that gets released.
Of course when it comes to popularity the bestselling cover for both the DX and the Kindle 2 is the Amazon Kindle Leather Cover. That may be because it is listed as an add on when you first purchase your kindle, or that it is one of the least expensive of the covers that you can purchase for your ebook reader.
The Amazon Leather cover has come a long way since its original design which was flimsy and didn't hold the reader in place securely. Since then, once the Kindle 2 came out, Amazon improved their covers that it fits the reader better, is now strapped in, and is much more sturdy.
Another positive about the new covers is that they don't add any extra bulk to your ebook reader - which is important if you like that streamlined look.
There is still no latch to keep the cover closed (like some of the designer brands include) but many resourceful customers have added some Velcro themselves to keep it together.

Belkin Neoprene Sleeve Kindle Case

The Belkin Neoprene is a Kindle case for the Kindle 2. This is actually a very good slip case for your Kindle and works great both for transporting it around and reading it.
Because of the simple design you don't need to worry about fastenings or mounts and so there is no risk of accidently cracking your Kindle (as is a major problem with some other cases).
It's also a very good price and is made to a high quality that looks like leather (but of course it isn't really).
Another thing that I like about this case is that it doesn't add any extra bulk. It has enough padding with the neoprene to keep your Kindle safe, but also allowing it to remain quite slim so it's easy to slip in the side of your handbag or briefcase.
Neoprene for those that don't know, is the same type of material that is used in wetsuits - its thick enough to provide protection but soft enough to allow flexibility and won't cause scratches or shocks.
You also get two zippers to close the case so your Kindle doesn't fall out (important if you are carrying it around in your bag).
Of course it doesn't come in all the wild colours that the M-Edge covers do, but if you are looking for a good simple design then the Belkin Neoprene Sleeve is a good choice.

M-Edge Go Jacket Kindle 2 Cover
I must admit, I'm in love with these bright and cheerful Kindle 2 cover designs from M-Edge. The Go! Jacket range is lightly padded and has a soft grey interior. Like all good kindle 2 covers, it holds the Kindle in place with a secure mounting system. It has both a hinge on the left side and little bands for the right corners for keeping it in place.
M-Edge Kindle covers are really rather lovely, and in new Go! range, the most popular colour is Smooth Mocha, followed closely Pebbled Fushia and Pebbled Purple.
The leather on them is a very good quality leather and it feels a lot softer than the Amazon covers. In fact it really looks like a leather bound book when it is all together, you forget that it's just a kindle cover.
It is slim and compact so it can fit in your purse or bag and it fold's back flat without any problem.
The M-Edge Kindle 2 covers are the same price as the Amazon cover as well, so personally I think these are a better buy than the official ones (since they come in such lovely colours), but I guess I'm a girl, so I like the bright colours. Some people may prefer the black cover of the Amazon kindle cover's.

Amazon Kindle DX Leather Cover
If the bestselling Kindle cover is the Amazon Kindle Leather Cover, it makes no surprise that the same leather cover (except this time for the Kindle DX) would be the number two bestselling cover (after all, Amazon do recommend them to buyers who purchase a Kindle in the first place).Again like the Kindle 2's cover, there are clips to hold your Kindle securely in place and you are able to use all of the buttons even while the cover is on.
The inner felt lining is very comfortable on your hand (it's pretty much what you'll feel if you are reading from your Kindle). Some people have reported that it feels soft and luxurious like grey flannel, so makes curling up with your Kindle in bed a tactile experience which can be comforting.
The leather itself on the front of the cover is decent enough and looks sleek (but some would say a little plastic looking). Sure you can get better quality leather in some of the other Kindle covers but not many other makers are creating covers for the Kindle DX yet - although I'm sure they won't be too far away.It is about double the price of the Kindle 2 cover (but then it's about double the size as well), but if you've paid that bit extra to get a DX then the extra for a cover isn't probably going to worry you.
Overall the it's a nice case that does a good job.

Amazon Kindle Leather Cover

The bestselling Kindle cover is the black Amazon Kindle Leather Cover which is designed to fit the Kindle 2's.
It's a very classic design of black leather and because it is designed by Amazon (it's the 'official' cover), you know that it will fit the Kindle 2 very well.
The cover clips on the design are great and hold the Kindle in place very securely. And all the buttons are accessible even when the cover is on, so it's very well designed.
Having a cover is not a necessity but very useful if you want to keep your Kindle in good shape or your travel a lot. The soft padded leather is tough enough to withstand a few knocks without damaging your ebook reader.
It's an elegant look and works really well with Kindle 2.
As a bonus it is one of the least expensive kindle covers available right now, but you would expect that compared to some of the 'designer' covers that are currently being released.
If you are looking for a negative about the Amazon Kindle Leather Cover then it would have to be that it doesn't have a latch or fastener to keep it closed, so this could be a problem if it shifts around in your purse or bag with a lot of other items.
